
BOR, South Sudan –South Sudan parliament has elected Obuch Ojwok Akuo as new speaker of South Sudan National Assembly weeks after former speaker resign from office.
Early this month, former speaker Anthony Lino Makana was forced to resign after he was accused of corruption by fellow SPLM lawmakers.
He denied the allegations but later resign after Kiir asked him to vacate.
Lawmaker, Veronica John, who represent Rubkona Countysaid Obuch Ojok who hails from Equatoria region was elected on December 16.
He said that Obuch was elected by Equatoria caucus in parliament.
“A new speaker of the South Sudan parliament has been elected,” John said.
Four Equatorians contested for the same position of speaker but John said that Obuch was declared to have worn the site.
After Ojwok become speaker of South Sudan National Assembly, he said he wanted to restore the reputation of parliament.
Ojwok was the first deputy minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism when the post was created on August 26, 2011 after the independence of South Sudan.
